I used to do theater back in high school, not in any professional context. I really want to get started in acting again, but all of the theaters in this area seem to require a headshot, lots of experience, acting classes, and so on. I just want to be able to go and audition. Any idea how I can get started in the Bay Area acting scene?
Also, does anyone know how to start getting work as a movie extra?

Re: Help
Tue, June 20, 2006 - 3:14 PMHi Jenny,
I know how you feel. I don't have the answers for you, but I might have some info. I recently met a guy in the TV business at a wedding reception and I was asking a lot of the same questions to him. He said I should keep an eye on "New Hollywood Stars" because they would have some kind of big opportunity for new actors in the bay area soon. It was frustrating because he wouldn't really tell me anything about it, but he did give me a website to go to. It's newhollywoodstars.com, but there's really nothing there but a logo and the words "It all begins July 2006".
Does anyone know what this is? Also, why would this guy be so mysterious about it? (I know for a fact that he is who he says he is) -

1. Make a resume. Be honest; at your age, you aren't expected to have much experience. I think listing your high-school work will be fine in your circumstances.
2. Audition, audition, audition! Get out there and make your face known. If you are the best person in the room, not having a headshot, etc. won't matter. (Conversely, having the most expensive headshot doesn't mean you get the part.
3. Get a headshot. Be on the lookout for good deal, like a photographer who is just starting out, or is willing to arragne a trade.
4. If you think you would like more training, start with a community college class. It is the best hours-for-dollars ratio out there. From there, you'll be able to make a more informed choice about what your next step should be.
Good luck!
ps.: As for extra work, there's not a lot up here, but some of the talent agencies in the area do hire for the occasional shoot that's up here. I'm not too knowledgable on which one is best (and I'm sure other people have preferences), but I'd do a little research into the agencies as a first step towards that goal....
